Let me start off by saying I am not a seamstres-at all! I only do basic mending and a few projects here and there. But when my husband came to me with another worn out work/dress shirt I decided not to just throw it out like I usually do. His shirts are made with really nice cotton fabric (the no-iron kind that actually works) and I hate to dispose of them when it is usually just the cuffs or neckline that is ruined. After a couple online searches I decided to attempt a variation of this
Shirt to Dress Tutorial from
Dana made it. The tutorial was a detailed step by step project so I assumed I could do it along with a few minor alterations. Boy did I assumed wrong! Here are the results:
 |
| Daddy's worn out (stained on collar) shirt |
 |
| The pieces are cut....no turning back now! |
 |
| The dress! A bit tight around the little belly! |
Well, as you can see I had high hopes. My daughter is very small for her age (not even 20 pounds yet already 18 months). However, I had to take advantage of crafting during her nap time so I just used a jumper that fits her as my pattern. Well, I made it too small!!! O'man all that work for nothing! I guess I didn't leave quite enough room for the seam allowance-look at that pucker on her cute little belly!
Since the lower half of the dress fit alright I think I can alter it and make it into a skirt. Hmmmm another sewing project....we'll have to see????
So cute! that is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to do this project for a while now... I've got a pile of my hubby's shirts to try it out on, I just need to find the time! (Story of my -and every other mom's- life!)
ReplyDeleteIt still turned out quite cute!
Very cute!

This is adorable! I've been making aprons with men's shirts for awhile, but the dress is super cute :-)
ReplyDeleteI just made this dress today for my 3 year old and it turned out perfectly. I am not much of a seamstress either and was very scared to make my own pattern. I made my husband help me with the sleeves! Anyway, save the dress, it turned out very cute, she might lose the belly as she gets a bit taller and it could fit her later, if it's too short by that time add a ruffle! You did a great job, try it again and just cut it a bit bigger but don't toss the one you already made!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kelly for the encouraging words! I do have a couple shirts that I can retry it on, I kept the old one so that I can just make it larger. Once I actually get around to doing it I will repost!
